Leonard "corky"'s Story

I have been asked to share my story, so I will take a shot at this. I left Midland in '61 and moved to Kansas City, Ka. working for Phillips Petrol. Co. in a refinery. It only took 4 yrs. to figure out that this was a bad idea. In '65 I moved to Dallas and started work as a draftsman for a couple of years and moved back to Midland to work as a draftsman for the Ortloff Corp. In Sept. '68, I went on school leave and entered Texas A&M and graduated in '71 as a civil engineer. My first engineering job was in Abilene, Tx. working for a power design company. I had a chance to design and construct power plants in Texas, Arizona and Alaska. I really enjoyed the construction more than the number crunching and spent more time in the field until they moved me to a project management position. I think at that time I finally found the best of all worlds to work in. P.M. has the technical, hands on and field construction all in one. In my travels I can remember running into Midland people in airports. I ran into Mike Humpreys in Dallas. That was always a suprise. In '77, I moved to Houston to make some money and hoped to go back to Abilene or West Texas after a few years. Well 33 yrs. later I'm still here. The company I went to work for was a offshore oil/gas engineering design co. I did some piping design for awhile and then move into the Proj. Mgn. group. I was responsible for projects for Transco, Mesa Petr. and other companies doing offshore production structures and pipelines. I stayed with my first company for 3 years and in '80 got an offer to own part of a company called Omega Marine. This was another offshore engineering company that ask me to start a proj. mgn. group, pipeline design group and construction inspection group. I was able to grow my groups and the decision was made for me to open an office in Singapore for the const.mgn. group. This was a lot of fum and very interesting to see and work in the far east. Although I did not live there full time, I would spend about 1 mo. each quarter t...Expand for more
here making sales calls and helping where needed. I traveled to Thailand, Malaysia,Indonesia and Australia. In '91 we sold Omega Marine to Aker Engr. out of Oslo Norway. I had to sign a contract to stay with the Aker company for 3 yrs. In May of '92, I started another company and hired a fellow that had worked for me to run the company till I finished my contract. I have since '94 worked full time as the CEO for CMSI which is a Engineerin,Proj.Mgn and QA/QC company. I have worked for Phillips in Venezuela and was there when Chavez came to power. I went to Singapore to audit the welding on a large tanker being converted to a production unit for Exxon. So I have had many years of great experiances and lots of stories. I know first hand ABOUT amobic dysentery amd T.B.... SO 18 yrs. with CMSI may be my last dance in the oil and gas world. Somehow slipped into all of the above, I managed to get married "3" times and have 4 children with 2 wives. I have 2- daughters and 2- sons. I should have spent more time building the families and less time on the companies. But none the less, I still have a good relationship with all and I am lucky to have 4 grand children and 1 great grand child. At this point in time I live west of Houston in Pattison Tx. on 20 acs. with 3 dogs, TOO many cats and 5 horses. I spend my free time tournament bass fishing and when not fishing, am still a car nut with 3 hot rods and several being built. I also manage to set on the back porch with a margarita and watch the horses. The future has some travel on the horizon to Calf. in Oct. and maybe to Jamaica early next year. I may finally learn to fly next year also. Last Nov's. trip to China was interesting....the wall, terracotta army and the mountains along the river in the profile picture were a few of the fun places to see. Lot's of other places in the world that I would like to see, but I want to see the USA first. I never went anywhere that I was not happy to get home and back to Texas. See Ya'll in Oct. .....................
